FMS Delhi will award highest weightage of 40% to VRC section in its shortlisting criteria for MBA 2017-19 batch while the other 2 sections on Quant and DILR will have equal weightage of 30%.
Your 100 percentile in Quant or DILR section and 90 odd percentile in VARC section in CAT 2016 can dim your chances of getting shortlisted at the 1st stage in FMS Delhi

Your performance in VARC section in CAT 2016 could bestow or snatch away the admission opportunity in MBA 2017-19 at FMS Delhi. You can get your dream campus FMS Delhi provided you score very high in Verbal Ability section as compared to other sections in CAT 2016.

Your 100 percentile in Quant or DILR section and 90 odd percentile in VARC section in CAT 2016 can dim your chances of getting shortlisted at the 1st stage in FMS Delhi as maximum weightage will be awarded to VARC section scores as compared to other 2 section scores in CAT 2016 exam held on December 4, 2016 across the country. Not overall, Sectional percentile important now
In a deviation from earlier process in shortlisting for MBA admission after declaration of CAT 2016 result FMS Delhi is going to adopt a different shortlisting criteria for  the PI round of MBA 2017-19 batch than the one it used to follow till MBA admission 2015.  A better bet than many IIMs and other top rated B schools, FMS is going to declare the shortlist of candidates based on varying weightage to sectional scores in CAT 2016 with a vision to improve academic and gender diversity in FMS class rooms.

VARC commands highest weightage
Out of your scores in all the 3 sections in CAT 2016, the score you obtain in VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension) section will carry highest weightage of 40% as compared to other 2 sections - Quantitative Ability (Quant) and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)  which carry 30% weight for each sectional scores.

According to Dr M L Singla Dean FMS Delhi “To encourage diversity of Gender and Academic Disciplines, for the purpose of shortlisting candidates for Interview Process different weightages shall be assigned to the scores of different sections of the CAT 2016. A composite score shall be computed giving weightages of 30%, 30%, and 40% to the scores of QA, DI/LR and VRC sections respectively as provided by the CAT Centre for the CAT 2016 Examination for candidates who apply to FMS. This composite score so computed shall be used only for shortlisting the candidates for Interview Process.”

Till MBA admission 2015 FMS used to shortlist the candidates for the PI round on the basis of overall CAT percentile. It will be better to evaluate your performance and as there is no dearth of good percentile predictors you can check your expected percentile on http://www.mbauniverse.com/cat-percentile-calculator.php and ensure where you stand.

Impact on 99 percentilers
Whatever may be the weightage awarded to CAT 2016 sectional scores, the impact which differential weightage to sectional CAT 2016 scores in shortlisting at FMS Delhi would make on the low or high VARC percentile may cost him in no admission. A 99 or above percentiler in CAT 2016 with low VARC score may not be shortlisted as against the one who scores lower overall percentile but high percentile in VARC section.

Case-1: 99 overall but low score in VARC – Not Shortlisted
For example if a candidate with 99 percentile overall has scored 92 in VARC; 100 in Quant and 96 in DILR, he will get the composite score of 36.8+30+28.8=95.6.

Case-2: 99 overall but high in VARC - Shortlisted
If a candidate with 99 percentile overall but has scored 99 in VARC; 98 in Quant and 96 in DILR, he will get the composite score of 39.6+29.4+28.8=97.8.

Obviously, despite scoring high and equal overall percentile in CAT 2016, the variation in sectional percentile has become a boon for the 2nd candidate while slightly low percentile in VARC section may keep the 1st candidate out of the list of the successful candidates included in the shortlist at FMS Delhi.

Minimum sectional scores: No such requirement
FMS Delhi has not prescribed any minimum CAT 2016 sectional scores to be obtained by the candidates to qualify for shortlisting. As against this, IIMs have prescribed minimum sectional percentile score in CAT 2016 in a range of 70 to 85 on the basis of which a candidate will qualify to be shortlisted for PI round.

Going by the past trend candidates should be aware that 98+ percentile in CAT 2016 overall will be required to be shortlisted at FMS in MBA admission process 2017. The catch is that if you score high in VRC section, you will be awarded higher weightage in comparison to your peers as the weightage to other sections is lower by 10%

Like for the top rated IIMs, you need high sectional scores apart from high overall scores in CAT 2016 to get shortlisted for PI round at FMS Delhi. Although no minimum sectional percentile has been announced for shortlisting you will still need a sectional percentile as high as 93 to 95 minimum to get shortlisted at the dream B-school.

Earlier, candidates with high overall percentile but low sectional percentile in CAT were not shortlisted by IIMs but used to find their names in FMS shortlist.  Similarly, the candidates with high balanced sectional percentile but low overall CAT percentile of 92-96 could find a place in the shortlist of candidates at an IIM but did not find the place in FMS shortlist.

The situation has changed now and the candidates will have to score high sectional percentile in CAT 2016 to get shortlisted for MBA 2017-19 at FMS Delhi.

FMS Delhi is a high ROI B school with a low fee structure and high placement packages.
The annual tuition fee payable to Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi is approximately Rs. 10,000/- for MBA (FT) programme.  FMS has an intake of 200 students in its flagship 2 years full time MBA programme affiliated to Delhi University.

The shortlist at FMS Delhi is expected to be declared in the month of February 2017 after declaration of CAT 2016 result in second week of January 2017.
