JAIPUR: Rohit Kumawat, one of the three engineering students, who was critically injured when the guard of a farmhouse in the city's Kho Nagorian area opened fire using his 12-bore gun at them on December 18, died in the hospital on Saturday morning.
According to RK Vidhyarthi, SHO, Kho Nagorian, Kumawat (21) was a resident of Gulabpura area of Bhilwara district and was pursuing engineering from a private college in Jaipur.
"He was admitted to the hospital after pellets hit his head, he was also operated upon by the doctors but he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday," he added.
On the intervening nights of December 17-18, Kumawat along with his four friends was returning after having dinner from a roadside dhaba in Jagatpura area.
"When they were returning to their hostel, they parked their bikes outside a farmhouse to take selfies. The guard asked the students to leave the area and this triggered an argument between them," said Narendra, the officer investigating the case.
Police said that the guard, identified as Zor Singh, fired at the students and injured three of them. "The guard was arrested by us, other two students who were injured, (Devendra Kumar and Shailendra Kumar) are out of danger," he added.
The police arrested Singh and registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) at the Kho Nagorian police station. "The guard alleged that the students were asked to go away as it was private property. But the altercation turned violent when the guard fired from his gun," Narendra said. Zor Singh alleged that he was afraid that the five students would overpower him and, therefore, fired in the air to disperse them. As it was pitch dark, the pellets hit the students.
"There were a total of five students. Two of them had gone to their hostel but returned to the spot after hearing gunshot. These two students informed us about the incident. We rushed the injured to the hospital and took the guard to the station," police said.
