Malad-based siblings Shivangi Sule, 23 and Samira, 21 alleged that they were treated like criminals by the police. The sisters had earlier alleged that they were kept in wrongful confinement by their parents and had reportedly threatened to end their lives, if they were not allowed to leave. When approached by friends of the two sisters, the Malad police counseled the girls and took them to a shelter home and later let them off.

Shivangi’s friend Anurag Khunger, alleged that Shivangi’s parents had been harassing their daughters since the past three years and had put restrictions on their movements. On December 19, when Shivangi and Samira came home late, they were reportedly kept in wrongful confinement. He alleged that their cellphones were snatched too, but Shivangi had somehow managed to get hold of her phone to contact him. Anurag and Shivangi’s employer Dr. Sunil Kulkarni, a psychiatrist, had contacted Malad police for help.

The police then intervened and after counseling the girls, took them to a shelter home as they were adults and reportedly did not wanted to live with their parents.
On Friday late night, the girls after being taken to women correction home in Chembur, were brought back to Malad police station and were let off after they refused to stay with their parents.

“The police officials gave us lectures on how we should behave with our parents. They behaved rudely and acted as if we were the criminals. We were asked to be taken to the women correction home meant for women involved in criminal activities and a lady officer pushed me inside the van as if i was a criminal,” said Shivangi.

Samira said, “When we refused to stay at the correction home, they brought us back to the police station. We were both asked to go back to our parents, but we refused and they let us go after taking the statements.”

Senior Inspector Sudhir Mahadik of Malad police station refuted the allegations made by the girls and said, “We counseled them and we let them off after taking their statements. The parents too were called, but since the girls are adults, they have decided to live independently.”
