Al Jazira will enter the New Year as Arabian Gulf League table toppers with 29 points from 12 matches. Coach Hen ten Cate boys ran down Al Dhafra 4-nil at the Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Stadium on Thursday evening.
Even though, the score line hints at a dominant Al Jazira performance, hosts Al Dhafra too had their moments. It was keeper Ali Khasif, who ensured a clean sheet for Al Jazira, with more than five goal-bound saves.
The proceedings started in the 17th minute with defender Fares Jumaa heading into the left net. And 12 minutes later, Brazilian striker Ailton Almeida made a mockery of defence to make it 2-nil with a long-ranger. The first half saw many end-to-end stuff but the last 15 minutes went without any further additions.
But just after the break, though, goals poured in.
In the 49th minute, Ahmed Al Hashmi made it 3-nil. It was three-pass goal. On a counter-attack, keeper Khasif made a long pass to Almeida, who in turn slid it to Al Hashmi. And the striker pocketed the ball nicely to the left corner of the goal.
The confidence was oozing and the 'Pride of Abu Dhabi' scored once more.
Mbark Boussoufa curled in a goal in the 67th minute. It was a free-kick just outside the danger area and the Moroccan coolly bended it to the left corner of the goal.
It would have been a fifth had Al Hashmi shown better control of the ball in 76th minute. He had just keeper Ali Al Ameer to beat but played the ball too long.
And in the next minute, Ahmed Rabee replaced Almeida. The substitute could have made it five had he connected onto the pass made by Al Hashmi.
Al Dhafra, however, did put up a fight but couldn't get through Ali Khasif. And the only time they did in the 57th minute, it was ruled off side. It was a frustrating night for the hosts and a splendid one for the visitors. Coach ten Cate will be a happy man as the team didn't apply brakes but were going for goals even till the last minute - something the Dutchman had longed for.
