Dining Out: Skeeter’s Mesquite Grill
Gary Adair and his wife, Betsy, opened their first Skeeter’s restaurant in West University in 1988. Since then, Skeeter’s has expanded across Houston with four locations serving Tex-Mex goodness to Houstonians. Skeeter’s is known for pleasing kids and parents, alike, with its laid-back atmosphere and smoky South Texas-style food.
The wood-burning mesquite grill produces succulent flavors on burgers, chicken and beef fajitas, and tacos. Rounding out the menu are Tex-Mex favorites like enchiladas and burritos, as well as large salads and sandwiches.
What you can count on at Skeeter’s is fresh food, at a reasonable price and great customer service. Not fancy; you order at the counter and the food is brought to your table.
Skeeter’s serves lunch and dinner at all locations and breakfast (7 a.m. at Weslayan and Sugar Land locations). On recent breakfast visits, I started with a big bowl of steel-cut oats (not available in many restaurants), then Skeeter’s famous Chicken Tenders and Waffles with berries and maple syrup. That’s what I call a breakfast.
On another early morning visit, I had Breakfast Enchiladas. This large plate had scrambled eggs rolled in tortillas topped with tomatillo sauce, cheese, avocado, tortilla crisps, and served with refried black beans. I could have this yummy dish for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I finished my meal with a lip-smacking buttermilk pancake (yes, you can order just one). My cup of java was Fontana coffee from Guatemala.
My last dinner at Skeeter’s began with a fried avocado. This beauty was not the least bit greasy and had cheddar cheese, poblano sauce and pico de gallo. Then, I had a 6-ounce fillet of grilled salmon that was a reasonable price. It came with Mexican rice and grilled veggies. Sometimes, I order the tasty Tortilla-crusted Tilapia.
Another favorite dish is Skeeter K-Bob with beef, chicken, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and pineapple. I adore Skeeter’s selection of burgers. My first choice is always the Grilled Chicken Breast Burger with traditional toppings, plus avocado.
Skeeter’s has a large selection of salads on the menu. I can make a great main meal of the Southwest Salad, with ground beef, black beans, tomatoes, avocado, toasted tortilla strips and chipotle dressing.
There is a nice Kids Menu with burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, quesadillas and tacos – all served with fresh fruit or fries.
I’ve had two desserts so far – a really moist and delicious Tres Leches cake and a more savory-than-sweet carrot cake.
Skeeter’s has four locations – West University, 5529 Weslayan St., 713- 660-7090; Sugar Land, 16535 Lexington Blvd., 281-980-0066; The Woodlands, 4747 Research Forest Dr., 281-364-1094; and Kingwood, 4121 W. Lake Houston Pky, 281-361-7168.
