Daring gang breaks into house, snatches gold chain

MADURAI: In a daring robbery, a couple having a nap after lunch were attacked by a gang inside their house and the woman relieved of her gold chain. The incident created a flutter in the locality after the neighbours learned about the daylight robbery. Samayanallur police have registered a case and are looking out for the accused.
The incident took place at Kuberalakshmi Nagar in Vaigai Road, Samayanallur on Sunday when Malairajan and his wife Revathi were sleeping after having lunch.Three men, all aged around 30, entered the house and attempted to cut Revathi's chain weighing six sovereigns. She woke up and raised an alarm even as the gang, armed with wooden logs, attacked the couple and attempted to silence them.
Police said the woman held on to a major portion of the chain while a part of it went into the hands of the robbers. Neighbours rushed to the house and moved the couple to a private hospital where the police arrived and registered a complaint. Police said the gang gained entry into the house by breaking open the front door. The presence of the couple aged less than 45 years did not deter them. The worth of the robbed ornament was about Rs 35,000.
In another incident, a truck driver was robbed of cash and mobile phone while he was sleeping on the roadside after parking his vehicle. The incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday on the national highway at Sholavandan. Two robbers climbed onto the truck cabin and robbed the 27-year-old driver, Yuvaraj of Kangeyam in Tirupur, at knife-point.
