North civic body: Oppsition wants ‘bank queue deaths’ in condolence messages

Mayor Sanjeev Nayyar began December’s House meeting by asking Pandey to deliver the condolence messages.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation Monday witnessed ruckus in the House as the opposition demanded that the Leader of the House, V P Pandey, include those who have “died in bank queues” in the condolence messages passed by the House.

Mayor Sanjeev Nayyar began December’s House meeting by asking Pandey to deliver the condolence messages. Pandey referred to soldiers killed in terror strikes in J&K, 140 people who died in the Indore-Patna express accident in November, as well as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Leader of Opposition Mukesh Goel then asked the mayor to include the names of those who died in bank queues. BJP members objected, and the mayor and Pandey urged the opposition to refrain from “politicising” condolence messages.

Goel said, “When we address all incidents that happen in Delhi and around the country in our condolence messages, why can’t we address deaths that are caused due to demonetisation?” When the mayor refused to accept the demand, Congress members assembled in the well of the house raising anti-BJP slogans.

Pandey later said that condolence messages passed by the House are for people who may have held Constitutional responsibilities, or may have passed in a calamity or soldiers at the borders .

Festive offer

“The Congress will also want accidents mentioned in the messages if this is the case. This was not an emotional appeal from them but a political one,” he said.

The mayor tried to run the proceedings but with the opposition unrelenting, the house was adjourned.
