MUMBAI: With the main suspect in the robbery and murder of Kandivli share trader Devendra Doshi committing suicide in Gujarat, police are groping in the dark for the Rs15 lakh stolen from him.
Police suspect Jayanti Savaliya (40) fled with around Rs15 lakh cash after murdering Doshi in his flat in Pratik building at Kandivli (West), with the help of his aide Nikunj Palora (24) earlier this month.
Palora has been arrested, and remanded in police custody till December 26.
“Savaliya consumed poison in a lodge at Talala Taluka in Gir district. He had used the documents of one of his workers to book the room,” said a police officer of Kandivli police station.
“On December 17, Savaliya and his worker checked into the lodge around 10am. Around 2.30pm, he sent his worker to go out to get something to eat and consumed poison. When the worker returned, he saw Savaliya in a semi-unconscious state. He allegedly murmured that he ended his life as his accomplice has been caught because of him,” the officer said.
“The local police did not find any valuables or cash. He may have handed over the booty to someone in his village in Rajkot or used it to clear debts. We are getting details of places Savaliya visited to know about the money trail,” police said.
Police said Savaliya planned the crime at a farmhouse in Kankavli on December 9.
“He told arrested Palora that they would flee after stealing valuables from Doshi’s flat. Savaliya planned it on December 9 after after Doshi called him to say he wanted to buy gold coins as he had some cash (approximately Rs15 lakh). We learnt about the money as witness told us that Doshi had called him also on December 9 about having some money,” said the investigators.
