Van Gaal, Hiddink and Capello in the frame if Emery loses job at PSG

According to TF1's Telefoot, Paris Saint-Germain are already considering relieving coach Unai Emery of his duties after a fourth Ligue 1 defeat of the season (2-1) away at EA Guingamp last Saturday.

The Spaniard has seen his side capitulate in recent weeks, losing in Montpellier and Brittany, as well as passing up top spot in UEFA Champions League Group A with a draw at home to Ludogorets Razgrad and failing to close the gap on OGC Nice at Le Championnat's summit after a 2-2 home tie.

PSG's match against FC Lorient on Wednesday night, the capital club's last of 2016, is being billed as crucial in order for Emery to save his job and the winter break could be extremely uncomfortable for the 45-year-old if he oversees another loss.

Here is a look at the figures who have been linked with the PSG job in the event that Emery is shown the door ...

Louis van Gaal

The Dutchman left Manchester United just after lifting the FA Cup last season and probably feels he was cut short just as he was starting to make some progress at Old Trafford.

That is one of his main problems though; the 65-year-old needs time to put his ideas in place and if PSG do separate with Emery, they will need a short-term fix to try to rescue their season.

If the Ligue 1 giants exit the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona in the round of 16, which is a likely outcome at this point, then the season will be viewed as a failure whoever is in charge.

On top of that, language would be an issue with Van Gaal and his arrival may well upset some of the already under performing players. Angel Di Maria certainly would not welcome him to Parc des Princes after their acrimonious relationship in Manchester.

Being linked with PSG is credible because of director of football Patrick Kluivert's links with his former coach at Ajax but a midseason arrival is unlikely.

If Les Parisiens dispense with Emery, they will need a quick fix and the only sort of candidate likely to provide one would be a Frenchman and there are few of those available at present.

Guus Hiddink

Like Van Gaal, RMC Sport's Hiddink links with PSG are given some legitimacy by his compatriot Kluivert's presence but the latter should be taken more seriously as a potential option than the former.

The 70-year-old has taken jobs on a short-term basis in the past, notably Chelsea, and performed well. He could be tempted to do the same in Paris, particularly if there is the possibility of making it long-term at the end of the season.

Hiddink is a pragmatic coach and would also command the squad's respect without the controversy Van Gaal would likely bring but language would again be a stumbling block.

Roberto Mancini

The Italian has been linked with the PSG job for some time and was one of the names regularly mentioned when former coach Laurent Blanc was under pressure.

No longer with Inter Milan, the 52-year-old is likely looking for his next landing spot and although Parc des Princes would no doubt be an attractive one, going there midseason is unlikely to be preferable -- although he did do that at Manchester City back in 2009.

Mancini, like Van Gaal, would probably need a full summer to implement the changes he would want to make to the squad, while all PSG would want is the desired results as soon as possible. If the Ligue 1 giants opted to keep Emery until the end of the season and then replaced him, Mancini would probably figure high on their list of targets.

Fabio Capello

Another Italian, the former England coach was named as a candidate for the job after Carlo Ancelotti left for Real Madrid and before Blanc got it.

Historically speaking, Capello has the experience and would command respect from the players. However, this potential opportunity might have come too late for the 70-year-old -- especially after his disastrous spells with England and Russia. He has also been out of the club game for over 10 years.

Verdict

Getting rid of Emery right now is not the way for PSG to go. There are too many other problems at the club right now for the Basque to be held solely responsible.

Bringing in someone else, whether it is Van Gaal, Hiddink, Mancini or Capello, is unlikely to salvage this season. The ailing French giants' best chance of that is sticking with Emery and backing him in the January transfer window.

If PSG finish the campaign poorly, then perhaps they can consider the former Sevilla man's position. However, if the man from Hondarribia is to go, then it should only be to make way for a truly top class coach and there are not many of those around at present.

PSG need to consider whether Emery is the main problem or part of a larger one that requires greater reflection internally.
