People have accepted demonetisation: CM Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis claimed on Sunday that people have accepted Union government’s move to discontinue Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes in an effort to curb black money. “We are in a situation where there is a lot of trouble. The people have accepted demonetisation because they want the menace of corruption and black money to go,” he said on Sunday.

Fadnavis was speaking at the Shanmukhananda Hall in Matunga where he was conferred the National Eminence Award by the South Indian Education Society. Moments after the society’s Chairman V Shankar said that the pain of demonetisation would be “momentary”, Fadnavis added, “We want to create a corruption-free state and a corruption-free society.”

An alumnus of SIES’ Saraswat Vidyalaya in Nagpur, Fadnavis also added that since his government came to power in the state two years ago, Maharashtra had risen to number three nationally in education indicators. “There are 17,000 schools in which the learning ability is 100 per cent.”

He also added that in two years, the government had made 4,000 villages drought-free and planned to make a total of 20,000 villages drought-free in five years. Apart from Fadnavis, SIES also awarded renowned Harikatha maestro Kamala Murthy, Indian Space Research Organisation chairman Dr A S Kiran Kumar and Dr John Marr, a British Indologist and scholar of Carnatic music and Tamil literature. Dr Marr did could not travel to Mumbai to receive the award and sent his son, James Marr on his behalf.
