A DAY after militants attacked an Army convoy on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway at Pampore, killing three soldiers, J&K DGP K Rajendra chaired a high-level security meet to review the security of the highway. A police spokesperson said, “The high-level meeting regarding the security of national highway was held in view of yesterday’s attack. He (DGP) directed the officers to devise foolproof plan for the national highway for safe and secure movement of the people and security forces.”

Rajendra asked Army officers to “strengthen the corridor protection” and the CRPF to “fine tune” the road opening parties along the stretch. The security meet followed a series of militant attacks on the national highway — especially in South Kashmir. Eight CRPF men were killed in a similar attack in Pampore earlier.
Sunday’s meeting was attended by GoC Victor Force, Major General Ashok Narula besides top police and CRPF officers. Following the security review meet, DGP Rajendra held a separate meet with Lt Gen J S Sandhu, the top Army officer in the Valley, in Srinagar. The meeting was also attended by top officers of army, police and other security agencies.
“The meeting discussed the implementation of different decisions with regard to strengthening and augmentation of the security setup across the Kashmir Valley,” the police spokesperson said. Meanwhile, the Army paid tribute to the three soldiers who were killed in the Pampore attack. An Army spokesman said a ceremony was held at 15 Corps headquarters, during which senior officials paid homage to the deceased.
The Army spokesman said the remains of the three will be flown for last rites to their native places, where they will be laid to rest with full military honours. “In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved families of the martyrs and remains committed to their needs and well-being,” he added.
