Perth Scorchers vs Brisbane Heat, Perth

Perth Scorchers continued their winning streak in the Women's Big Bash League 2016. The Suzie Bates-led side overcame Brisbane Heat at the WACA on Saturday (December 17). They won by eight wickets and in the process recorded their second win on the trot.

Bates won the toss and decided to bowl first. Piepa Cleary made the first incision in the third over when she removed Beth Mooney. There was a steady partnership of 34 runs for the second wicket between Kirby Short and Smriti Mandhana, but once they departed in succession, Brisbane could not stop the slide. In the end, they were restricted to a below par 101 in their alloted 20 overs.

Brisbane made a good start with the ball with Bates sent back inside three overs. However, it was only one of the two wickets they picked, the other being Elyse Villani for 17. The pair of Nicole Bolton and Heather Graham ensured they were no more hiccups, adding 68 runs for the third wicket, and ensured an easy win for their side.

Brief scores: Brisbane Heat 101/9 in 20 (Smriti Mandhana 21; Emma King 2-10, Rebecca Grundy 2-18) lost to Perth Scorchers 102/2 in 17.4 (Nicole Bolton 46*, Heather Graham 29*) by eight wickets.

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars, Melbourne

Melbourne Stars got back to winning ways after losing their previous encounter to Sydney Thunder as they beat Sydney Sixers at the Casey Fields No. 4 in Melbourne by seven wickets.

Sixers were in all sorts of trouble after Ellyse Perry won the toss and opted to bat. The skipper was out in the very first over and soon the visitors were reeling at 5 for 3. Ashleigh Gardner and Sara McGlashan got together to steady a sinking ship. The pair added 80 runs for the fourth wicket, but both went in a space of three balls. Cameos from Marizanne Kapp and Angela Reakes gave the score some respectability as Sixers finished with 122.

Stars also started off in a nervy fashion, losing Emma Inglis and Jess Cameron inside three overs. However, Meg Lanning and Hayley Jensen repaired the innings with a 63-run stand. The former went on to score an unbeaten half century and with the support of Katie Mack registered her side's second win of the season.

Brief scores: Sydney Sixers 122/8 in 20 (Sara McGlashan 40, Ashleigh Gardner 38; Emma Kearney 3-13, Danielle Hazell 3-17) lost to Melbourne Stars 124/3 in 17.2 (Meg Lanning 66*, Hayley Jensen 31; Marizanne Kapp 2-21) by seven wickets.

Sydney Thunder vs Adelaide Strikers , Sydney

In yet another low-scoring game, it was Adelaide Strikers Women who had the better of Sydney Thunder Women at the Howell Oval, Sydney. With this win Adelaide go on top of the points table.

The hosts decided to bat after winning the toss. Skipper Alex Blackwell was the only one to get into double figures in the top-order as Sydney slipped to 53 for five. Handy knocks lower down the order by Naomi Stalenberg and Rene Farrell took Thunder past the 100-run mark.

A target of 103 never looked too threatening for Adelaide. A solid 65-run partnership for the second wicket between Bridget Patterson and Sophie Devine made sure that the sailing was smooth. Though they lost three wickets in succession, the pair of Shelley Nitschke and Tahlia McGrath saw them through the finish line.

Brief scores: Sydney Thunder Women 102/5 in 20 (Rene Farrell 29*, Alex Blackwell 28; Tahlia McGrath 2-21) lost to Adelaide Strikers Women 103/4 in 17.5 (Sophie Devine 43, Bridget Patterson 27; Samantha Bates 2-14) by 6 wickets.

Melbourne Renegades vs Hobart Hurricanes, Bendigo

Hobart were the only team to defend a total on the day and Heather Knight's side successfully defended 133 against Melboure Renegades to record their second win of the season.

Renegades elected to bowl and the bowlers immediately justified the decision by picking up two wickets inside the first three overs. However, Georgia Redmayne and Amy Satterthwaite guided their team to safety with a 55-run association. The latter continued forming useful partnerships with the rest of the batters and helped Hobart finish with a competitive total.

The chase started off slowly before Kris Britt took the onus on herself to play the sheet anchor. The right-hander added crucial stands with Danielle Wyatt and Molly Strano, but when 10 were required in the final over, she failed to take the team through. Once again it was Satterthwaite, who stared with the ball, bowling the last over and giving her side a three-run win.

Brief scores: Hobart Women 133/4 in 20 (Amy Satterthwaite 45*, Georgia Redmayne 39, Veronica Pyke 27*) beat Melbourne Renegades Women 130/5 in 20 (Kris Britt 51*, Molly Strano 34; Satterthwaite 2-22) by 3 runs.
