SILCHAR: Angry relatives harassed and manhandled doctors and nurses of the Red Cross Hospital over the death of an infant during delivery here on Friday.
One doctor, identified as Saugata Narayan Deb belonging to the gynaecology department, and seven nurses were injured in the incident. While Deb and six nurses were released after preliminary treatment at the Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH), another nurse, Lovely Chakrobortee, was still in hospital as her condition has been said to be critical.

Sources said a baby died during delivery in the morning in the Red Cross hospital, which angered the relatives of the infant. They alleged that the baby had died due to negligence of the doctor and nurses, who they attacked. They also ransacked the furniture of the hospital, which is run by the Silchar Red Cross Society.
The hospital authorities informed the police, who helped bring the situation under control and sent the victims to SMCH. Police arrested three persons, including the father of the baby, in connection with the incidents.
