3-yr jail for 2 in solar scam
Chennai: A court in Kerala on Friday awarded three-year imprisonment to solar scam accused Biju Radhakrishnan and Saritha S. Nair while acquitting television and film actress Shalu Menon, her mother and a team solar staff, sources said.

Moreover, the judicial magistrate court in Perumbavoor slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them.

The conviction comes in the first of the cases to be registered in the multi-crore solar scam in which several political leaders, including former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy, were allegedly involved.

This particular case in which Saritha and her estranged boyfriend Biju Radhakrishnan were convicted relates to cheating a Gulf returnee A. Sajad of Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district to the tune of over Rs 40 lakh after promising a project by the Team Solar Renewable Energy Solutions Pvt Ltd for which Biju was the managing director and Saritha, a partner.

Biju Radhakrishnan and Saritha were arrested in 2013 in connection with the scam. She got out on bail after eight months in jail.

Saritha had kicked up a political storm in the state after she levelled serious allegations, including allegation of sexual abuse, against several leaders in the previous Congress-led UDF government.
