GURUGRAM: Nearly four months after he took charge as the commissioner of police (CP), Sandeep Khirwar has not only introduced significant changes in the functioning of police department, but he has also scrapped several initiatives introduced by his predecessor, Navdeep Singh Virk.
Khirwar, who assumed his office on August 17, earlier insisted that ‘good initiatives should not be allowed to die’, while referrering to the changes brought in by Virk.
However, months after Virk was shifted to Rohtak, Khirwar does not seem keen to retain the changes.
TOI on September 28 reported that Gurgaon witnessed a cyclothon as Car-Free Day initiative, spearheaded by Virk, completed a year in the Millennium City. Khirwar, however, had discontinued the drive in the beginning of September. He said it was supposed to be more of a people’s movement than police’s initiative.
Sources said Khirwar and traffic police chief, JCP Y Puran Kumar, observed that a handful of cops are pedalling for kilometers on the Car-Free Day, every Tuesday.
Khirwar also scrapped the ATM Cell set up by Virk on August 21, last year. The ATM Cell was meant to curb the rise in online banking and debit card frauds. The cyber-crime cell, that was handling the cases before ATM Cell was introduced, is again investigating the cases after November 26. “Two wings (Cyber Crime Cell and ATM Cell) were doing similar kind of work,” Khirwar told TOI.
