Maharashtra civic polls: BJP wins in 5 of 14 municipal councils

The BJP emerged triumphant in five of the 14 municipal council polls in Maharashtra where it will install its presidents. After winning 52 of the 147 municipal councils in the first phase of election in November, the BJP continued its good show in the second phase, the results of which were declared Thursday.

The five councils that the BJP won are Lonavla, Talegaon Dabhade, Alandi in Pune district and Udgir and Nilanga in Latur.

The Congress won Indapur and Jejuri councils, while the NCP won Baramati and Ausa and Shiv Sena bagged Junaar. Locally floated groups won in Daund, Saswad, Shirur and Ahmedpur.

With a total of 324 council seats up for grabs, the NCP has emerged as the biggest party having won 93 seats, followed by the BJP with 81, Congress (45), Shiv Sena (23), and others (82).

Festive offer

The Congress seemed to have suffered a setback in Latur district where it has a considerable support base. It lost Udgir and Nilanga to the BJP. In Ausa, it was trumped by the NCP, while a locally floated front emerged triumphant in Ahmedpur.
