The Union Home Ministry on Thursday withdrew the NSG protection coverage of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, with the Congress party decrying it and complaining that it was a political conspiracy. “I don’t know why, but the Union Home Ministry today suddenly withdrew my NSG coverage,” Gogoi said. He was placed under Z-plus category and provided NSG coverage in less than one year of taking over as chief minister in April 2001. Gogoi also posed for a photograph with the NSG commandos before they moved away from his official residence here.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia, complained that it was a political conspiracy. “Withdrawal of NSG cover to Tarun Gogoi is a political conspiracy to exert pressure on him because he has been too vocal about the wrong policies of the BJP-led government,” Saikia said.

An Assam Police official said though NSG cover was withdrawn, Gogoi continues to remain in the Z-plus category. The decision to withdraw NSG cover was taken by the Union Home Ministry and communicated to it on Thursday, he said. The Sate Security Review Committee (SSRC) would meet here on Friday to make a fresh assessment of Gogoi’s threat perception. “We will anyway provide him adequate security from the Assam Police,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Assam Police, have written to the Union Home Ministry to provide Z-plus security and NSG cover to present Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. “It has been weeks that we have recommended Z-plus category security to the present chief minister. But it will ultimately depend upon the home ministry’s own assessment of the threat perception,” he said.
