ABC Books, $49.99

With its 400 pages documenting Cadel Evans' single-minded determination to become a world-class cyclist, his training schedules, the highs and lows of being part of a professional team, the many races he has competed in and the drug scandals that plagued the sport, this is a book for the lycra brigade. At 21, Evans based himself in Switzerland in order to be at the centre of mountain bike racing. Hard as it was living alone in a foreign country, as an only child he was schooled in self-reliance. A few years later he switched to road cycling and began the upward climb to winning the Tour de France. Evans' mother is the enduring figure in his private life, as is his son. Puzzlingly, his wife drops out of the picture without explanation, raising unanswered questions about the price one pays to achieve such heights.
