Jeonbuk Motors sink Onyango, Mamelodi Sundowns in Japan

KAMPALA.

There will not be much chatting on the plane as Denis Onyango and company head home after Mamelodi Sundowns’ no show at the Fifa Club World Cup.

Losing all matches is not what the Uganda Cranes’ goalkeeper and teammates had anticipated during their week-long stay in Japan.

Onyango, in goal for the South African side, could hardly stop the fire as his side went down 4-1 to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the competition’s fifth-place play-off yesterday.

Goals from Kim Bo-kyung, Lee Jong-ho and Kim Shin-wook’s efforts sandwiched Ricardo Nascimento’s own goal to guide the South Korean opponents home.

There was a 48th minute consolation goal from Percy Tau but the game was already out of reach for Pitso Mosimane’s charges.

It means Sundowns have conceded six goals in two matches having lost 2-0 to Kashima Antlers in the quarterfinal.

Yesterday, Japanese league winners Antlers progressed to the final after seeing off Copa Libertadores champions Atletico Nacional 3-0. They will face the winner between Real Madrid and Club America today.

But Onyango can keep head held high having become the first Ugandan player to feature at the competition since its inception in 2000.
Fair enough though and he will shift focus to the Africa Cup of Nations slated for Gabon in a month’s time.
