A special CBI court has refused to grant permission to Peter Mukerjea to travel to Bengaluru for a family function, but has allowed that he can attend it through videoconferencing from jail. Mukerjea, who is lodged in Arthur Road jail, had last week sought permission to attend the aashirwad ceremony of his niece, who is getting married, from December 16 to 20.

CBI special counsel Bharat Badami had opposed Mukerjea’s plea saying there were security concerns in allowing him to leave Mumbai.

Mihir Gheewala, Mukerjea’s lawyer, argued that he was not a terrorist, referring to the CBI’s contention in opposing the plea, and said that being the eldest member of his family, he should be allowed to go to give his blessings to his niece.

Special Judge HS Mahajan said security and safety cannot be compromised in taking an undertrial outside the state jurisdiction and that if Mukerjea is willing, he can watch the ceremony via a video link. Meanwhile, on another plea by Mukerjea seeking a laptop to write his autobiography, the court has directed jail authorities to decide as per provisions in the jail manual.
