GUWAHATI: Two militants of the Paresh Baruah faction of banned United Liberation
Front of Assam (ULFA) were killed and as many others captured by troops of the Assam Rifles during an encounter in Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday.

The encounter that took place at Dharampur in Changlang district at around 4pm was
continuing when reports last came in. According to defence sources, an operation, carried out based on intelligence inputs about the movement of the insurgents, led to the encounter.

"Two militants were killed and two others, including a female cadre, were captured in the encounter, which is still on. One of the slain insurgents was from Tinsukia district of Assam. The two militants captured are also from Tinsukia," the sources said.

They said the encounter had taken place with a group of eight ULFA insurgents. The remaining four had managed to flee.

Apart from ULFA, the Naga militants are active in Arunachal's Tirap, Changlang and
Longding districts bordering Myanmar. They are the corridors of the insurgents to sneak into the neighbouring country, where they have their bases, when cornered.

The sources said the security forces had of late intensified their counter-insurgency operations in these three districts following some incidents of ambush in Assam, Arunachal and Manipur by the insurgents. About half a dozen security personnel were killed and several others, including Para commandos, injured
in the incidents.
