Six people, including a woman, were taken into custody in Thiru vananthapuram for failing to stand up when thenational anthem was played in the ongoing 21st International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). The incident took place at the city's Nishaganthi Auditorium during the screening of the Egyptian movie Clash on Monday evening, sources said.Museum police, that arrested the six youths, said an inquiry is being conducted with the six people. It is understood that the six people failed to stand up when the national anthem was played. Several others in the auditorium objected to this and informed the police.
Apolice officer said the six people -Dinesh Kumar, Joel Jose, Hanifa, Nausheed, Ashok Kumar and the woman Rathimol -were taken into custody following a complaint lodged by the organisers of IFFK. The six have been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant). It is understood that Kerala DGP Loknath Behera has directed police to monitor cinema halls following representations made by Yuva Morcha and other outfits in connection with the issue.
Supreme Court had recently held that playing the national anthem before movie screenings shall be compulsory even at film festivals and that all people will have to stand to show respect.
