The woman disturbed an intruder who had broken into her house.
The offender fled the scene with a stolen wallet. The contents of the wallet were later found scattered on her front lawn, with the wallet abandoned several streets away.
The incident followed what local Chief Inspector Rowan O’Brien called a “highly unusual” rise in break and enter offences in Inverell since September. One local couple’s home was broken into twice in just two months.
A number of youths have been charged over similar offences, with a 14-year-old and 17-year-old allegedly found hiding in a shed with stolen goods last Thursday.
Sergeant McKay said the home invasion was reported later in the day, and urged locals to contact police immediately in the future.
“People need to remain vigilant and call us as soon as possible, even if they just hear a noise outside,” he said.
