A WEEK after the Haryana Youth Congress election, result of the president’s post continues to be on hold as the Indian Youth Congress Election Commission had been flooded with irregularities that took place during polling. Sachin Kundu, who was backed by Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda, polled 25,086 votes defeating Chiranjeev Rao, son of Haryana Congress leader Captain Ajay Yadav and son-in-law of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, by 10,076 votes during the election on December 4. However, a day later, the result was withheld after some contestants lodged complaints.

Factionalism in the Haryana Pradesh Congresss had an impact on the results of the Youth Congress as well. Kundu’s victory was being seen as a shot in the arm by the Hooda camp, which claimed that 16 of the 22 district presidents and most general secretaries owed allegiance to it.

Chiranjeev had complained to the Election Commission about “interference by senior party leaders in the poll process”. In his complaint, he has stated that Kundu was openly supported by senior leaders, including Deepender Hooda. Further, senior leaders held press conferences in his support and their pictures were also present on banners of Kundu seeking votes. He has also alleged rigging in the election as well as during counting. According to sources, Chiranjeev was called by the Election Commission for a hearing where he pointed out the irregularities.

The complainants have submitted evidence, including video footage and pictures, to the EC. There are complaints about rigging in Rohtak, Sonepat and Jhajjar as well as firing in Nuh and Sonepat. And, in Panchkula, the district returning officer was beaten up. Another candidate for the president’s post said, “The entire idea of holding elections in Youth Congress was to give a chance to a common worker to get elected.

However, this purpose is defeated as only those backed by senior leaders have a chance of getting elected. And, there were several irregularities during polling.” Seven candidates were in the fray for the post of Haryana YC president. Besides Kundu and Chiranjeev, Devesh Kumar, son of Hodal MLA Udai Bhan, contested, polling 1,722 votes. Anant Dahiya, who has held the post of IYC secretary, polled 8,475 votes, to come third.
