The city boasts of many metal bands but young musicians Harish Venkatraman, Ravi Kiran, Krishna Dass and Ankush Venkatesh, define their band ‘We’ll Decide On Wednesday’ as something different. The band, which gives a comic touch to their lyrics, aims to expand beyond the metal scene. In a candid chat with Tini Sara Anien, they trace  their journey.

How did the band come together?

Ankush: I met Krishna through a common friend in college. He knew Ravi and our vocalist at that time. We came together as a band for a college fest. Despite the change in lineup, we stayed on as a band because there were a lot of fests that we could be a part of. We were trying to get exposure and finding our own sounds.

Can you elaborate on the genre of the band...

Harish: All of us come from different backgrounds but we describe our music as just metal. Ankush was into melodic death metal, Krishna has his roots in progressive metal and I was majorly into thrash metal before moving on to progressive metal. Ravi is an all-rounder who listens to anything from pop to alternative rock. We came together to create our music.

The story behind the band’s name...

Ankush: We were all on a WhatsApp group and were discussing about jamming on a Wednesday. That’s when someone pointed out that we needed a proper name for the band and suddenly Ravi said ‘We’ll decide on Wednesday’ and Ankush immediately suggested it as the band’s name. It was funny and we stuck with the name for the gig that followed. We, being engineering students and known as procrastinators, didn’t change the name and it stuck on.
True to our name, we are the first comic metal band and we got into writing comical songs.

How is this band different from other metal bands?

Ravi: We give a humourous touch to light-hearted subjects unlike the usual metal music. A lot of people misunderstand metal as something connected to rebelling. People who weren’t necessarily into mainstream metal music also listen to our songs, identify with it and sing along, which was really big for us. It’s always nice to see the reaction of people when they hear our band’s name and stick around to know more about our
music.

Some of the band’s own compositions...

Krishna: Our first track ‘Divergence’ came into being when we didn’t have an idea of how the band would progress. The other songs that followed were ‘Fight Fire With Hippopotamus’ and ‘Universal Lack of Hygiene’.

The ‘Inappropriate Reptile’ has got us a lot of reactions from the crowd as we try to make them sing along. Our last track ‘SOS’ is an alternative take on the story of ‘The Pied Piper of Hamlin’.

One of your memorable experiences...

Harish: We’ve played at many venues including Indigo Live Music Bar, Strawberry Fields and ‘Pebble - The Jungle Lounge’. Our most memorable experience was when we opened for ‘Lagori’ — the crowd, sound system and the setup were amazing.
