Manipuri artefact on display in Mysuru
Unique form: Senthak Senkha is being displayed at IGRMS as part of monthlong expo
Mysuru: A special artefact, signifying the glory of Manipuri King, became the first “Exhibit of the month” of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manava Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Wellington House, on Irwin Road, under its museum series.
The Senthak Senkha is a metal tray embellished with fine details of floral rim and a crown-like lid. According to experts, the crown-like lid symbolizes sky and the tray-body is regarded as a divine representation of earth.
This metal craft, which was part of lineage of the Meitei community, was given as reward during the days of yore. Later, the trays were also used for offering beetle nut and leaves to people visiting the family. Apart from these, they were used during religious rituals.
The unique articaft has, however, been confined to the areas of Heirangoithory and Aneibam Leikai of Imphal. Starting this month, the southern regional centre of IGRMS will display one special object from each state.
IGRMS officer in-charge Vijay Mohan said the museum primarily functions as a cultural centre and exhibition space, showcasing arts from rural India. “Our key programmes include interactive educational programmes, exhibitions and training workshops. We also conduct cultural programmes comprising folk arts, tribal traditions and various other theatrical performances,” he said.
“The exhibition of Senthak Senkha will conclude on December 31,” he said.
