AMRITSAR: A group of Shiv Sainiks stormed the venue of Punjab International Trade Expo (PITEX) in Amritsar on Saturday and asked Pakistani exhibitors there to remove their banners and their country's flags from their stalls, and allegedly manhandled them too.
No action has been taken against the members of the Right-wing body who forced themselves into the exhibition after staging a protest outside. The group comprised about 20 people.
This is the first time that such an incident has taken place at the event organized by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI). Shiv Sena (Punjab) chairperson Sudhir Suri said they had already the organizers against inviting Pakistani exhibitors, “given the anti-Pakistan sentiments in India following terror attacks and killing of our soldiers“.
He refuted allegations of manhandling the exhibitors. “We neither manhandled any exhibitor nor used any abusive language or even had a verbal duel,“ he said, adding that they also urged the visitors to not buy Pakistani products.
A Pakistani exhibitor, Hina Anjum, complained of poor security arrangements at PITEX. “Such exhibitions only help bring people of the two nations closer and provide an opportunity for interaction between common people,“ she said. “But at the same time she rued that there were some people who didn't want even this initiative to continue.“
When contacted, Amritsar police commissioner Lok Nath Angra said they had not received a complaint yet. “We will take action if somebodys approaches us," he said.
