    IIT Kharagpur: It soon plans to start MBBS degree course

    Synopsis

    IIT-Kharagpur has expanded within the campus to courses beyond technology. The latest move is to establish the Dr BC Roy Institute of Medical Science and Research.

    Kharagpur, a little town 125 km from Kolkata, finally made it to Bollywood, thanks to a biopic on MS Dhoni. The cricketer had worked for South Eastern Railways and his days in the town were a rather depressing period in his career.

    Apart from boasting about having the longest railway platform (now third, after Gorakhpur and Kollam) in the world for decades, the town has another reason for global fame — IITKharagpur, the first ever IIT.

    It is also the largest, spread across 2,100 acres, and with a student population exceeding 11,000. There’s no dearth of famous alumni — Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and former RBI governor Duvvuri Subbarao.

    However, apart from the IIT, educational institutes in the town inspire little confidence and local students travel to Kolkata and Bhubaneswar for their studies. The IIT, meanwhile, has expanded within the campus to courses beyond technology.

    The latest and boldest move is to establish the Dr BC Roy Institute of Medical Science and Research, which will be a super-speciality hospital that also offers MBBS degrees to start off.

    The permission to launch the degree course in medicine was granted in 2015. The IIT had started in 2001 an institution called the School of Medical Sciences and Technology, offering specific courses in medical technology.

    IIT-Kharagpur was also the first IIT to have a management school. The Vinod Gupta School of Management was started in 1993 and is often ranked among the top 20 business schools in the country.

    The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law began in 2006 in collaboration with the George Washington University Law School and offers LLM and LLB degrees.

    From engineering to management, medicine and law, IIT-Kharagpur offers a lot of choices.
