Giants' Odell Beckham fined for verbal abuse of official

Giants WR Odell Beckham (13) is restrained by teammates at the end of Sunday's game.

New York Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. was fined $12,154 for verbal abuse/excessive profanity towards a game official after last weekend’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The fine is not related to Beckham’s postgame criticism of officials, including saying that referee Terry McAulay’s crew should be banned from working future Giants games. It wasn't immediately clear if Beckham also was fined for those remarks to reporters.

Beckham’s confrontation with the official went largely unnoticed Sunday. But he made clear during a media session in the locker room that he was unhappy with a “horrible” pass interference call against him in the first quarter, after which he claimed an official told him to "get out (of) my face." And Beckham could be seen gesturing after several incompletions during the game when he felt Steelers players interfered with him.

This week, Beckham took more shots at officials, saying “Stevie Wonder can see it” when calls are missed as he felt they were Sunday.

Beckham was fined at least four times earlier this season: $12,154 for a group demonstration with teammate Victor Cruz in the season opener; $36,000 for unnecessary roughness in a September game against the New Orleans Saints; and $24,309 for unsportsmanlike conduct in October games against the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens.

He also was fined and suspended one game for repeat violations of the NFL’s player safety rules last season.
