Thieves have used a digger to rip a cash machine from the front of a village supermarket.

A gang of four men was reportedly seen using the excavator to remove the machine from the shop in Kirton in Lindsey, North Lincolnshire, police said.

The machine was then driven away from the High Street on the back of a lorry.

It is the latest in a number of similar raids across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire over the last year.

Police said they were called at 02:00 GMT.

Det Sgt John Cram appealed to owners of heavy equipment "to ensure it is properly secured".

"This is the type of equipment that thieves targeting ATMs use and in many cases they will steal it from local building yards or farms," he said.

"By reducing the availability of this sort of machinery you can help to reduce the risk of further ATM thefts."
