Defence volunteer wounded from ambush

YALA – A security patrol protecting teachers was ambushed and a defence volunteer shot in the stomach in Yaha district on Friday morning.

The six-man patrol was attacked near Pu Lae village of tambon Ba Roh about 8am, police said.

At least three gunmen opened fire on them with assault rifles from the side of the road. The patrol returned fire and after about five minutes of exchanging shots the ambushers pulled back and fled.

Defence volunteer Abdul Roman Kila, 33, was hit in the stomach by a bullet and rushed to a hospital. He was reported to be in a stable condition.

Police and rangers were attempting to track down the attackers.
