Dense fog affects normal life in region, several injured

CHANDIGARH: Several people were injured in road mishaps due to low visibility, as a thick blanket of fog enveloped several places in Haryana and Punjab on Thursday morning, disrupting road and rail traffic.
At least 15 persons were injured when over 20 vehicles including a few state transport buses rammed into each other due to reduced visibility levels at Shahbad near Kurukshetra, police said.
Another fog-related mishap was reported from Sirsa district in Haryana, which also involved multiple collision of vehicles, that left a few persons injured.
According to the MeT Department here, fog reduced visibility at several places including Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Rohtak, Faridabad, Gurugram, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Jalandhar.
Visibility was reduced considerably due to foggy weather, an MeT official said, adding shallow fog prevailed in Chandigarh during early morning.
While low visibility due to fog had forced cancellation of all 23 flights at the Chandigarh international airport on Wednesday, an airport official said some flights got delayed on Thursday as well due to bad weather conditions.
Movement of vehicular traffic was also affected at many places in the two states due to thick fog while several trains were reported running late due to reduced visibility caused by the foggy weather.
The MeT official said that dense fog will prevail over the next two days after which visibility levels will improve for a few days due to a western disturbance which was approaching the region.
Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 8.7°C, two notches above normal limits.
Ambala recorded a low of 9.4°C, up two notches against normal. Karnal recorded a low of 8.2°C, one notch above normal limits.
Hisar recorded a low of 8.5°C. Narnaul experienced a cold night at 6°C, two notches below normal.
In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 9.7°C, three degrees above normal. Ludhiana's minimum settled at 9.8°C, two notches above normal while Patiala registered a low of 10°C, two degrees above normal limit. PTI
