The Franklin Templeton Shootout began with a scramble on Thursday and the two-person teams took advantage of the rare scramble format to go low on Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida.

The duo of Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker posted a 16-under 56 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Harris English and Matt Kuchar. Kelly and Stricker combined for only three pars all round with 14 birdies and one eagle.

English and Kuchar closed the round strong with a trio of late birdies, including a chip-in birdie on the 16th from English that was one of the shots of the day.

The duo that's made the most headlines coming into the week is Bryson DeChambeau and Lexi Thompson, the lone LPGA Tour player in the field, and those two finished with a 10-under 62, six back of Kelly and Stricker.

DeChambeau debuted his side-saddle putting stroke in competition for the first time, while Thompson gave the team a late boost with an eagle on the par-5 17th after a great 5-iron and then cleaned up the putt.

The competition changes from a scramble to modified alternate shot format for the second round on Friday.
