Why Spurs shooting coach used a farting hippo to start and end Boris Diaw's sessions

The Utah Jazz’s Boris Diaw is one of the most interesting players in the NBA. He has a coffee machine at his locker (yes, he says he has one in the Jazz locker room), took the coffee machine to the Grand Canyon this past summer and would consider living on Mars.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe had Diaw as a guest on his podcast, The Lowe Post, that released on Thursday, and it’s a fascinating, hilarious hour-long chat. The 34-year-old talks about everything from what he likes about Utah so far to why he uses a segway to walk his dogs.

You should definitely go listen to the entire thing, but here’s one of the stories that stood out because of how random and funny it is. Here’s how it starts:

Diaw said that in 2014 when he was on the Spurs, the shooting coach, Chip Engelland, brought out this photo of him to place under the basket for their sessions, just because it was funny.

Lowe follows that up  by saying that before the podcast, he had talked to Diaw’s former teammate, Matt Bonner, who said he used to shoot on the opposite basket and said he always heard laughter coming from the other side of the court.

Diaw then explains the farting hippo:

“The year after he (Engelland) had to find something else (other than the wine photo), and so at that time, I released a book with National Geographic that’s called Hoops to Hippos … I did eight years in a row taking safari pictures, and so as a result, I had a book coming out called Hoops to Hippos. So he found something that he told me was an Internet sensation. It was a farting hippo.

“He would bring the farting hippo to shootaround, and so to end the session, every time I make the last shot, he would just hold the hippo and make it fart … It was to start and to finish.”

I imagine it was something like the hippo that CBS was sued for using on NCIS.

If you haven’t already, go listen to the full podcast, especially if you’re in need of a good laugh.
