Mumbai: Byculla police arrested a husband-wife duo on charges of stealing gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh from an apartment where the woman worked as a domestic help. Police have so far recovered ornaments collectively valued at Rs 11 lakh.
The theft took place between October 20-28 at Aashiyana Apartment, Gun Powder Lane, in Mazgaon. Under DCP Pravin Padwal’s supervision, a team led by inspector Nandkumar Gopale began the probe and arrested the accused.
The ornaments were recovered from West Bengal. Those arrested include Sakina Mullah and her husband Rafeeque Mullah. “Sakina worked with the complainant’s family for one-and-a-half months before she disappeared one day. While other three domestic helps reported for work, her mysterious disappearance raised suspicion. She had taken away the ornaments from a cupboard which was generally not locked,” said an officer. Police traced her husband Rafeeque who led them to Bengal from where the cops picked up Sakina and recovered the jewellery. “The accused couple is now in police custody,” added an officer.
