Leopard cub died of electrocution in Haridwar

After cases of elephants being electrocuted by high-tension wires near Rajaji and Corbett, a leopard was found killed after getting struck by transformer kept on a small platform on ground in Haridwar. The forest department has registered a case against the power department for their negligence.

HARIDWAR: After cases of elephants being electrocuted by high-tension wires near Rajaji and Corbett, a leopard was found killed after getting struck by transformer kept on a small platform on ground in Haridwar. The forest department has registered a case against the power department for their negligence.
Divisional forest official, HK Singh said, “The power department has placed the transformer on a slightly raised platform on the ground where some electric wires are also hanging out of it.
It is a risky proposition where electrocution was not a distance possibility. The cub was found dead on it in the morning.”
The post-mortem report carried out by the doctors too confirmed electrocution as cause of cub’s death.
He said, a case against the concerned official of the power department has been booked for criminal negligence, after consulting the chief wildlife warden. The latter could not be contacted for his version.
According to Santram, sub-divisional officer, the place where the cub was electrocuted is close to residence of senior superintendent of police and in the vicinity of Rajaji Tiger Reserve. The cub seemed to have come from the forest and got electrocuted by the wires.
Meanwhile, it was on Wednesday, a leopard cat was also found dead on Library Happywali Marg in Mussoorie. The cat was three and half year old. The cause of death of the animal is not known.
