Boulder makes “climate commitment” goals official

City Council approves measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions and boost renewable electricity use

Boulder has adopted new “climate commitment” goals to drastically scale back citywide greenhouse gas emissions and promote renewable electricity.

Boulder City Council this week unanimously approved three separate targets, all of which had been unofficial city goals for months, but had not yet been formally adopted.

The city will aim for an 80 percent reduction — from 2005 levels — of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. A related target involves the city achieving an 80 percent reduction from 2008 levels by 2030 for all facilities and property belonging to Boulder government.

The city also adopted a goal of 100 percent renewable electricity citywide by 2030. Boulder currently gets its electricity from Xcel Energy, which has reported 22 percent of its electric portfolio is renewable.
