It was a day of near-misses for India, especially for the close-in fielders, and India skipper Virat Kohli. The ball had managed to beat him just enough, either on the left or right throughout the day. There were instances where he managed to get finger tips, but they just didn’t stick. One, however, did, and it was courtesy some sharp movement at the first slip position in the second session of the day’s play.

In the 39th over of the innings, England were in complete control of proceedings on the opening day. Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings gave the visitors a solid start before the England skipper made the long walk back after contributing a brisk 46 to the team’s total. Next man in Joe Root started in solid fashion and started building a partnership with debutant Jennings. England’s No.3 entered the 20s with ease and was looking good to convert.

The first ball of the 39th over of the innings, bowled by Ashwin, was easily defended back to the bowler by Root. The next ball, Ashwin tossed it up. Root, lured into the drive, could manage only manage a thick part of the outside edge. What should have been a regulation catch for Kohli at the first-slip position turned out to be a good one. The skipper is himself to be blamed for the need for late reflexes.

Kohli was going the wrong way, to his right, but made the adjustment in no time to get down on his left and complete the catch. He was not at all in balance while taking the catch but the Indian skipper ensured to collect it cleanly and give India a much needed wicket on the first day of the fourth Test between India and England at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
