During the India-England Test match in Mumbai, umpire Paul Reiffel met with an unfortunate accident that forced him to leave the field.
A throw from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, fielding at the boundary, hit the umpire on the head and fell on the ground. He was attended by the English physio but was later taken off the field. He received medical attention in the dressing room.
This incident happened in the post Lunch session and the umpire was later taken to hospital for scans and treatments. Reiffel, a former Australia fast bowler, was positioned a the square-leg and Bhuvneshwar lobbed a throw to Cheteshwar Pujara. But the throw did not travel till Pujara and hit the umpire.
Marias Erasmus was replacement on-field. He was the third umpire in this match but had to come on the field after the incident. C Shamsuddin, who was the reserve official, took over the duty of third umpire.
It is yet to be seen if Reiffel can take field in this match. That can only be known after the scan results. Thursday is only the first day of the Test match and four more days are yet to be played in this match.
The fourth and penultimate Test between India and England began on Thursday at the Wankhede stadium. India had won the second and third Test to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
