Ranchi/Daltonganj: A sub-zonal commander of CPI Maoist, Sanjay Korwa, carrying a bounty of Rs5 lakh, surrendered before DIG of police Palamu, Vipul Shukla and SP Anup Birtharey in Latehar on Wednesday. He surrendered without any weapon. The Maoist was accompanied by his wife and wore his Maoist uniform.
The couple were offered a basket of fruits and shawls and along with cheque of Rs5 lakh as an incentive under the surrender policy for Maoists—Nai dishayen.
Birtharey said Sanjay had five cases against him and he was operative in Bareysarn, Mahuadarn and Mandal. Inducted in the Maoist outfit around seven years ago, Sanjay reached the position of sub-zonal commander for his ferocity in ambushing the security forces. He is learnt to have remained in regular touch with Arvindji, Bada Vikas and also cadres of Chhatisgarh Maoist outfit.
The surrender programme was attended by the family members of ten Maoist commanders so that they may convince them about the perks being offered by the police and encourage them to surrender.
Birtharey said, “Family members of Kargil Yadav, Chhotu Kharwar, Balram Oraon, Pappu Lohra and Gopal Ganjhu were especially invited to grace the surrender so that they understand that those who give up arms are actually supported by the police department in their proper rehabilitation.”
This has been the sixth surrender in Latehar in a short period of time. The district police have also been successful in finding 14IEDs on Tuesday and earlier six alleged Maoists were gunned down by the police last month.
Maoist leaders also believe that the surrender policy of the state government has worked effectively. Maoist spokesperson of Bihar Jharkhand special area committee Gopalji said that it is not the cash incentive that attracts the Maoists because most of the time total payment, as announced under the surrender policy, remains pending. “It is the relaxation in cases and speedy trial that attracts the Maoists cadres who have not been idealists,” he said.
