KANPUR: Passengers travelling in Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)-Gorakhpur Express train (12542) had a narrow escape after a fault in one of the coaches was corrected at Kanpur Central station on Wednesday.
The passengers created a ruckus when the train reached Kanpur Central station at around 11.50 am. They said that despite complaints of a strange sound coming from wheels in S-5 coach of the train, the railway officials did not take any immediate action.
When the train arrived at Kanpur Central, a technical snag was discovered in S-5 coach that was fixed in around two hours.
The passengers complained that the problem was observed soon after the train had crossed Bhusaval junction which is 909 kms away from Kanpur. The passengers were surprised that their complaint was not taken seriously even at few big stations like Bhopal and Jhansi where the train had passed before arriving in Kanpur.
One Akhilesh, an IIT (Madras) student of mechanical engineering department, who was travelling in the train informed that a weird sound was coming from the wheels. “When the train crossed Bhusawal, the passengers made a complaint but no action was taken. Infuriated over the callousness of the railway staff when the train arrived at Kanpur station, the passengers broke into arguments with railway officials and created ruckus”, he added.
Mohd Zulfiqar, who was travelling to Gorakhpur, said he felt jerks several times, but when the frequency of jerks kept on increasing, a few passengers informed the train staff. “Besides repeated complaints, nothing was done. People were angry and in panic as memories of Indore-Rajendranagar Patna train accident are still fresh in their minds," he added.
Station Superintendent, RPN Trivedi said that a technical snag had developed in the coach which was fixed within an hour, when the train arrived at Kanpur Central. “After the technical staff checked the train it was allowed to leave for Gorakhpur,” he added.
It may be mentioned that in a short span of one month, two major train incidents had occurred.
The first one was the derailment of Indore-Rajendranagar Patna express in which more than 150 passengers had died and around 300 got severely injured while the other one had occurred last week on the same route in which Gorakhpur-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kushinagar Express got detached from the rest of the train near Jhansi. The train was coming from Kanpur and moving towards Bhopal.
