Soon, underpass, flyover on 2.5km stretch to decongest Iffco Chowk
As per the plan, an underpass will be built near Iffco Chowk Metro station.
GURGAON: The district traffic police have made extensive plans to decongest Iffco Chowk. An underpass and a flyover are in the pipeline on the 2.5 km stretch between Iffco Chowk and MG Road. Both are one-way routes.
Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Y Puran Kumar has devised the plan to decongest MG Road. The National Transportation Planning And Research Centre (NATPAC) has been assigned the task to study and finalise the engineering details.
As per the plan, an underpass will be built near Iffco Chowk Metro station.
Currently, vehicles exiting this Metro station and bound for MG Road, first take a left turn towards Iffco Chowk junction, and then take a U-turn towards MG Road. As a result, the Iffco Chowk junction on the highway is often choked. The underpass will start from near the Metro station and will end near Central Mall on MG Road, allowing vehicles bound for the ‘Mall Mile’ to go there directly via the underpass, saving time and putting less pressure on the junction.
Along with this, a flyover will be built on the highway for vehicles bound towards MG Road from Jaipur. The flyover will start from near Sector 17/18 on the main carriageway, and end at MG Road. Effectively, it will allow vehicles approaching from the Jaipur side to take an elevated U-turn from the main carriageway that ends at MG Road. Through this, vehicles bound for MG Road will not have to wait at the Iffco Chowk junction to take a right turn. Thus, not only will commuters get a signal-free drive, but the highway junction will also be decongested.
“This might be a short stretch, but it is one of the busiest spots in the city. It affects traffic flow on the highway at Iffco Chowk and connectivity between Delhi and Gurgaon through MG Road. We are finalising the feasibility plan, following which necessary steps will be taken to start work,” said JCP Kumar.
The plan is to complete the work in three phases. The first phase will involve digging tunnels near Iffco Chowk Metro station and on MG Road. These tunnels will be connected in the second phase, completing the work of the underpass.
Ramps of the flyover will be built on the highway, in the second phase. Once both ramps are completed, the curved U-turn flyover will be completed in third phase, connecting the two ramps and providing free passage for vehicles from the Jaipur side towards MG Road.
