Indie Bookstore Book Court is Closing

Brooklyn indie bookstore BookCourt is closing after 35 years in business.

Yesterday, owners Henry Zook and Mary Gannett revealed plans to retire. The bookstore’s last day will be New Year’s Eve. “Against many odds, BookCourt grew and flourished in a time when many independent bookstores closed,” the booksellers wrote in a letter addressed to “customers, neighbors, and friends.

“We realize that BookCourt’s closing leaves a void in the neighborhood and the industry,” they continued.

“We encourage everyone reading this to find and support other indie bookstores, here is Brooklyn or wherever you may be,” the letter encouraged. “While bookstores do close for various reasons, we want to remind you that many more are flourishing and your support is vital to their success.”
