Colbert Asks Biden: Was There a Day Where You Wished You Entered the 2016 Race?
Vice President Joe Biden appeared on The Late Show last night to talk about how he’s feeling after the election, and what he really meant by his ambiguous comments this week about running for president someday.
Biden started things off by joining Stephen Colbert to give a family pep talk and comfort America over peoples’ anxieties about Donald Trump‘s imminent presidency. “It happens to every family, but I’m telling ya: This terrible feeling you’re having right now, it’s not permanent,” said Biden. “It’ll be over in four years, maybe eight.”
The Vice President later explained that he was as disappointed by the election’s results as much as he was by the lack of substantial policy discussion towards the end. Colbert also asked Biden about whether he still feels any regret about not getting in the race, a decision the vice president made shortly after his son Beau died from brain cancer last year.
Biden responded that he made the right choice at the time, because what he was going through would’ve prevented him from putting his whole heart into a presidential campaign.
“What I regret is the circumstance that led me not to be able to run… Do I think that I was best prepared at this moment to lead the country? I did, because I thought the issues of the greatest concern were in my wheelhouse, things I’ve dealt with my whole career. So in that sense, I’m disappointed that I’m not going to be in a position to be making some of those decisions, but I don’t regret the actual decision.”
The Late Show host asked the Veep about his recent remarks that indicated we wasn’t ruling out the possibility of running for president in 2020.
“I can’t see the circumstance in which I’d run but what I’ve learned a long long time ago Stephen is to never say never,” Biden said. “I have no plans, but I’m gonna stay deeply deeply involved.”
