The US Embassy in Fiji says it is seeking additional information from the Fijian government about the deportation of US citizen Karen Seaton at the weekend and allegations she was not allowed to contact the Embassy for consular assistance.

American citizen and Fiji permanent resident Karen Seaton was deported at the weekend for allegedly swearing at Fiji's President, something she denies.

In a statement, the Embassy says it takes support of U.S. citizens very seriously.

Meanwhile, Fiji's opposition National Federation Party President, Roko Tupou Draunidalo, has called for the removal of what she calls excessive powers given to the Minister responsible for the Immigration Department, which she says infringe on basic civil and political rights

And the leader of Fiji's largest opposition party, SODELPA, describes the deportation of Ms Seaton and previous critics of the government as vindictive, shameful, and undemocratic.

Sitiveni Rabuka says a SODELPA Government will reverse travel bans placed over the last ten years on critics who had merely voiced opinions on governmental actions since 2006.

Ms Seaton was removed from Fiji after voicing concerns about the impact of retrospective changes to the Land Sales Act on her and other foreign born landowners in Fiji.

SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula says the party was vehemently opposed to those changes when they went through Parliament in 2014.
