Andhra Pradesh: Iranian citizen gets one-year jail in drowning case

Jual Rajgupta was acquitted by the Court due to lack of evidence while Nargis K. Asthari was awarded one year jail term and Rs 3 lakh fine.

BHUBANESWAR: Iranian citizen Nargis K. Asthari, who is the chief of Prison Foundation in Rayagada, has been sentenced to one year jail term and Rs 3 lakh fine by the SDJM court, Rayagada, in connection with the drowning of a minor in November 2014.

According to the prosecution, in November 2014, the officials of the Foundation had gone for a picnic at Nagavali river with some children. One of the children identified as Asim Jilakira was swept away in the river and died. Following the incident, Asim’s father lodged a complaint against Nargis and secretary of the Foundation Jual Rajgupta.

Hearing the case, the SDJM court pronounced the judgment sentencing Nargis to a prison term of one year along with fine. The court, however, acquitted Jual Rajgupta due to lack of evidence. “Jual Rajgupta was acquitted by the Court due to lack of evidence while Nargis K. Asthari was awarded one year jail term and '3 lakh fine to be paid to the kin of the victim,” public prosecutor Sachidananda Khadanga said on Tuesday.
