TAP Portugal: Toronto among six new destinations

A TAP Air Portugal Airbus A330 takes off from the Lisbon Airport on Feb. 6, 2016.

TAP Portugal will make Toronto its fifth destination in North America, pushing ahead with a trans-Atlantic expansion launched earlier this year.

The flights to Toronto will begin next summer, with the Star Alliance carrier offering flights to its main hub in Lisbon on Airbus A330 widebody jets. The airline didn’t specify its schedule for Toronto, but its online booking engine shows five weekly flights beginning June 10.

The service will bring TAP back to Toronto for the first time since 1994, according to Routes Online.

TAP included Toronto as part of a six-city expansion announcement. The carrier's five other new destinations – all in Europe – are: Budapest, Hungary; Bucharest, Romania; Las Palmas and Alicante, Spain; and Stuttgart, Germany.

Once those flights begin, TAP says it will be flying to 52 destinations in Europe.

As for its footprint in North America, TAP’s other destinations are Boston, Miami, New York JFK and Newark.

TAP’s routes from Boston and New York JFK launched just this past summer, restoring routes to Lisbon the carrier dropped during the previous decade.

Also flying nonstop between Toronto and Lisbon this summer are Air Canada, Air Transat and Azores Airlines (previously known as SATA). Air Canada is a Star Alliance partner of TAP.
