Unfavourable weather brought down tea production in October by 9.66 per cent, but helped by higher output in earlier months, the cumulative production in ten months rose marginally by 0.83 per cent. “Tea Board has now announced Oct production data, which shows 10.48 per cent fall in North India over October 2015, to dip to 129.40 million kg (mkg) and 1.62 per cent fall in South India to reach 18.24 mkg”, Rajesh Gupta, compiler of Global Tea Digest told BusinessLine .

The total production in October dropped by 9.66 per cent to reach 147.64 mkg.

However, the country’s overall production in the ten months was higher than Jan-Oct 2015 due to better production in earlier months in North India.

“Our compilation shows that in the ten months, North India produced 3.28 per cent more to reach 871.91 mkg. South India’s output dropped by 9.66 per cent to reach 177.40 mkg”, Rajesh Gupta said.

Collectively, India’s production in the ten months rose to 1049.31 mkg from 1040.50 mkg. This increase of 8.72 mkg posted a marginal gain of 0.83 per cent.

Assam continued to top the country’s production table at 552.20 mkg (Jan-Oct 2015: 546.94 mkg), followed by West Bengal at 296.55 mkg (275.25 mkg).

In the South, Tamil Nadu produced 123.74 mkg (140.27 mkg) and Kerala 49.37 mkg (50.76 mkg).
