HARIDWAR: The protest by Gurudwara Gyan Godari Prabandhak Committee (GGGPC) to demand land to rebuild Gurdwara Gyan Godari near Prem Nagar ashram in Haridwar entered 64th day on Tuesday.
Saradar Trikochan Singh, secretary, GGGPC, said, “The protesters are demanding land to rebuild the ancient gurdwara, which was built to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev's visit to Haridwar in 1505. The demand is genuine and the agitation is peaceful.”
GGGPC president Harjeet Singh Dua said that according to a media report published on December 2
"The land of upper Ganga canal the administration proposes to give for gurudwara belongs to the government of Uttar Pradesh.
If the Uttarakhand administration was serious about fulfilling our demand, they should have given a piece of their own land for Gurudwara Gyan Godari," they sad.
looked differently at the whole thing. He referred to the regular routine being followed at the place on the Ganga bank near Prem Nagar Ashram where the Sikh community has agreed to construct the gurudwra and where the dharna is being staged. "The five Guruvanis are recited every morning, Sukhmandir Saheb paath is held in the day, prasad distributed and finally langar (public kitchen) is organised," he said adding, "we have in a way a gurudwara there already for all practical purposes." He quoted a newspaper report of December 2 to say that "the Uttar Pradesh government has agreed to transfer 338 hectares of canal land in Uttarakhand to its government. As the land proposed to be given to GGGPC for the gurudwara (as per Uttarakhand administration's letter written to the Uttar Pradesh government) is included in the 338 hectare land, it will naturally be awarded to us," he said.
