Cleaner showered in gifts after being humiliated online

A Bangladeshi man ridiculed by online trolls for looking longingly at gold chains in a jewelry shop window is now getting a crash course in blind generosity.

Nazer al-Islam Abdul Karim, a 65-year-old cleaner from Bangladesh who works in Saudi Arabia, was mocked by an Instagram user who snapped a candid photo of him with the caption: “He looks as though he is seeing trash.”

CNN reported that the insensitive post prompted Abdullah al Qahtani – whose Twitter handle Ensaniyat means humanitarianism in Arabic – to launch a campaign to find the man in the photo staring at the bling.

“I received tons of phone calls and messages in response to my tweet,” al Qahtani told CNN. “Some were really helpful, while others were claiming that they were the cleaner. But three hours [after] my tweet, which was shared over 6,000 times, we found him.”

Karim was identified from the reflection of the jewelry store window shown in the photo. Al Qahtani then posted another photo of Karim on Sunday, prompting a flood of messages from people wanting to get in touch with the cleaner, who earns about $187 monthly, according to Al Arabiya English.

“Some wanted to donate gold sets, others cash, iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones,” al Qahtani told CNN. “Even a rice company wanted to donate rice bags to Nazer al-Islam.”

A television executive in Saudi Arabia identified as Turki al-Dajam posted a photo of Karim holding an envelope and several pieces of gold jewelery.

Karim said he was overjoyed by the gifts and generosity of strangers.

“I was just doing my job as a cleaner in the municipality and found myself in front of the gold shop,” he told CNN. “I am very happy about the gifts and very thankful.”
